Spiritual Weight Loss Factors
I talked about at the beginning an overarching issue which needs to be understood if you are to be successful in your quest for how to lose arm fat (or how to lose back fat, or how to lose thigh fat for that matter). And that is-the spiritual comes before the natural. Perhaps this should have been placed first in our list of weight loss solutions, because I believe if you don’t get this right ,you may get six-pack abs and nice arms but at some point the good old fleshly nature will present its own vision of what you should be doing and you’ll be back on the meat pies and french fries routine.
Diets and diet books are in every store you go to. Yet paradoxically, in countries like the USA, Australia, New Zealand (and increasingly in the Asian countries which are developing an appetite for western food), people have never been more overweight. So it stands to reason that people (particularly women) who are trying to lose weight -whether it’s 100 lbs or just a few pounds off of that unsightly arm fat- are often among the most discouraged people around. They’ve got husbands to contend with who constantly compare them to the skinny supermodels, fad diets that don’t work etc etc.
Weight Loss Solutions – Spiritual Weight Loss books
Is there a more spiritual answer? We believe so-you can achieve success in your quest of finding out how to lose arm fat, or how to lose back fat-or whatever weight loss goal you have. Science is beginning to substantiate the idea that PRAYER WORKS in health matters–for example ,if in your quest for weight loss solutions you find you still lack encouragement on the “inside”, new books that deal with weight loss from a spiritual perspective- like Dieter’s Prayer Book– will give you that daily ounce of spiritual encouragement you need.
Three authors I want to recommend are Marty Copeland, Dr Don Colbert and Maureen Kennedy Salaman. Marty Copeland uses Christian principles and her own testimony in her teaching but you can benefit even if you have little faith or another faith. That is because she is practical and writes from the perspective of a mum juggling kids, family, job and all the normal things in life that beset women wanting a way to get on top of their weight issues.
A review of her book “Top Ten Diet & Fitness Strategies” says “She’s been there, and done it. This isn’t spiritual hocus pocus and it isn’t counting calories/carbs, etc. Marty addresses some of the central issues that lead us to reach for food instead of God, and gives solid scriptural advice on how to grow spiritually in the areas of discipline and caring for oneself. Despite having read many so called “Fitness” books, I still got a good bit out of this and will probably read it again…although the book is not that well-presented in publishing standards she is sincere and she doesn’t carry the snooty, “I did it so you can to” that we all get tired of hearing. If you are struggling with issues of self-discipline and cannot stick to a diet, read Marty’s book..It’ll definitely help you change..” (review paraphrased for space)
Marty says in an article written in Cfaith.org “God showed me that He didn’t call me to be skinny and that my goals would have to line up with His Word before He could get involved in my weight loss. Until I placed myself in agreement with His Word, I would continue to fight this war on weight in the arena of the flesh.
The Bible says in James 4:7 that we are to “submit (ourselves) therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from (us).” I was trying to resist the devil, and it wasn’t working because I had not submitted to God’s Word. She goes on to talk about what the Bible calls “sowing to the flesh” and how she escaped this continual roller-coaster of success and failure with food by activating one of the fruits of the Spirit which is available to every believer.
Is My Weight Problem a Sign of a Deeper Spiritual Problem?
At this point we would make one distinction between our view (and Marty’s) and that of other self-help Spiritual weight loss authors and gurus who have recognized that your weight problem is actually a sign of a deeper spiritual problem (or “spiritual uneasiness” as one writer puts it) that is s manifesting itself . We agree with this viewpoint:it’s helpful that they remind us in this materialistic world that we are at the core spiritual beings. But then they diverge by enjoining food addicts and people desiring weight loss to focus deep within themselves on their own beings and personalities-to which they attribute “divinity”.
Here we diverge from them, as would writers like Marty Copeland and Dr Don Colbert who often write in their books that you should focus on God THROUGH His Word-and that will help set you free to be all that God intended you to be. Marty Copeland said in an article in Believers Voice of Victory your first key is to gain knowledge-but it is very specific knowledge She writes “and the most important knowledge is found in the Word of God (italics mine). To gain victory in the area of weight loss and healthy eating, I had to find out about what God said about those things..here’s what I discovered. First God showed me that healthy eating has always been His plan, according to Genesis 1:29: ” And God said, Behold I have given you every herb bearing seed , which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed;to you it shall be for meat.”
She goes on to say that is God’s recipe for healthy eating (vegetables, fruits, nuts -and after the Flood-protein). To listen to an archived broadcast by Marty called”The True You” click here.
Another helpful writer that has (actually she passed away a few years ago)a helpful viewpoint on spirituality and health and how natural products can help your health generally is Maureen Kennedy Salaman. She was a respected natural health expert and her book “All Your Health Questions Answered Naturally” has helped many people.
And there’s Dr Don Colbert. He has written many useful books on the spiritual aspect of weight loss. Books such as “Get Fit and Live” and “”I can do this Diet”. He talks about exercise as “stirring the waters”. He compares our bodies (which are, largely water) to water and how if water is left to stagnate it becomes fetid and stinking. Contrastingly, running water is usually fresh and “alive”. He says our bodies were “designed to move” and if we stay on our couches therefore the results can literally be toxic.
He answers questions like “Is it OK to exercise when I’m sick”. He reminds us of that the American College of Sports Medicine recommends you have a check -up with your doctor if 2 or more of the following apply to you-and we would certainly endorse this before you begin an exercise program like max workouts (one of the ones we recommend):
- you are a man older than 45 or a woman older than 55
- you have a family history of heart disease before age 55
- you have high blood pressure
- you have high cholesterol
- you are currently smoking or have quit within the last 6 months
- you are overweight or obese
- He adds his own list of checks that you should run through with your doctor before embarking on an exercise routine. Read more on Dr Don Colbert’s “Get Fit and Live”
To conclude, we would put it to you that you are more than a collection of chemicals. Your are a spiritual being made in the image of God. If you approach losing weight or losing fat from your arms or legs purely on a natural level you are bound to fail. You are not an evolutionary accident. You are far more complex and important than that! Also if you understand that the spiritual controls the natural, you will realize that you can win in the battle of the bulge. God loves you -therefore you should love you. But invite God to help you. If you are going to win the war against fat maybe you should consider this overarching principle. Put that information into action together with the Diet Solution and Shin Ohtake’s MaX Workouts and I believe you then have a fighting chance for LONG TERM WEIGHT LOSS from arms and other problem areas.
